Do you have disrupted sleep every night?

Do you feel anxious and irritable and you’re not sure why?

Do you feel tension and overwhelm when a new demand arises?

That’s stress.

The state of the world and daily life can feel overwhelming, and you might not relate what you’re feeling to stress. But it impacts us all.

Life is stressful.

I didn’t know what stress was.

I was working in a new job with more responsibility, a bit out my depth. Driving up to two hours in peak Sydney traffic. There was no time in the day to stop or rest, always rushing from one thing to the next.

I wasn’t sleeping at night, waking up and not getting back to sleep. Constantly looking at the clock till the alarm would go off. This went on for weeks. Lack of sleep was making me edgy and tired. And sometimes there would be a tightness in my chest and things felt surreal. I didn't feel like being around others, so I was isolating myself.

I didn’t understand what was happening. I felt stuck and overwhelmed.

One night I had a panic attack, while driving. I blacked out. Luckily I got to the side of the road. I was freaked out and the days after were filled with high anxiety.

I remember the exact moment when I knew something had to change.

I’d taken a long walk along the waterfront at Manly near where lived. I stopped and stared out over the water, thinking about my life. I had the thought ‘If this going to be my life, I don’t want to live this way.’

And that was a scary thought - not wanting to live.

I had to make a change.

I decided to try yoga and meditation. At first I wasn’t sure if this was what I needed. It was a little weird as I’d never heard of it (it wasn't huge in 2000). At the first few classes I noticed it was really difficult to relax and be still. My mind was racing so much.

But after a few weeks I noticed how good I felt after class. So I started to practice meditation at home with CD’s.

I began to feel empowered by the steps I was taking. I started to feel calmer. I felt clearer. I slept through the night a few times in a row. I felt more relaxed and happier in myself. My friends said the old me was coming back!

So I kept doing it and things slowly came back into balance.

Are you looking for a change? Something needs to shift.

Ask yourself…

... What if you could live with more ease and contentment?

... Imagine operating from a place of greater calm and strength.

... How different your days would be after better sleep.

It’s a fact, meditation is good for your body, mind and soul.

Elizabeth Thornton

Mindfulness is a way of being present: paying attention to and accepting what is happening in our lives. It helps us to be aware of and step away from our automatic and habitual reactions to our everyday experiences.

Pema Chodren

Meditation practice isn’t about trying to throw ourselves away and become something better. It’s about befriending who we are already.

Jon Kabat-Zinn

The real meditation is how you live your life.

Yoga for Stress | Yoga and Meditation Instructor

Kyle-Lee Young

Hi. I'm Kyle. I've been practicing yoga and meditation for 20 years and teaching for 14 years. I started yoga because of high levels of stress and anxiety. I was able to successfully address the symptoms through yoga and meditation and get back to normal living. Not saying I’m totally stress free, it’s part of the human experience. But I’m definitely bringing a more positive and pro-active approach to challenges these days. In 2014 I discovered Mindfulness Based Stressed Reduction. I read Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat Zinn the founder and led myself in the 8 week course with great results. It brought joy back into my life and I realised the power of mindfulness to help me be with whatever is happening, with kindness and inner strength. I decided I wanted to teach the program and after many years personal practice and a yearlong training program I became a qualified teacher in 2019.

Kyle is an approachable, knowledgeable and caring teacher. With her gentle voice, she guides us into self-awareness and self-acceptance. For me, Kyle's mindfulness and yoga practice is an invitation to find the strength hidden within ourselves and reconnect with our true self.  Sofia

FAQ

  • How is this course better than using an app or a short course?

It takes time to create change. And change happens through a dedicated practice. Scientific research suggests eight weeks is the best time for new cognitive, emotional, neurological and behavioural pathways to develop and become embedded. And if you tried using an app and things don’t seem to be improving, an in-depth course offering a personal relationship with a teacher and a structured program may have better outcomes for addressing chronic stress and pressing issues. Face to face provides the opportunity to support each other and learn.

  • I’ve tried meditation before and can’t do it/am not good at it.

Every meditator has experienced this and had these thoughts at some time. The MBSR course has been designed in a specific way to develop mindfulness and meditation skills over the 8 weeks. You’ll understand the science behind mindfulness and why the perfect place to start is where you are at right now. MBSR offers ways to explore mindfulness through different practices - lying, movement and you don’t need to sit on the floor crossed legged.

  • What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?

Jon Kabat-Zinn developed the 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course in 1979 for people who had no other treatment options for managing their conditions - people suffering chronic and acute stress, chronic pain and illness, and associated anxiety and depression. MBSR offers a tested approach. Thousands of scientific studies have been conducted over 39 years, confirming the important transformative outcomes of this 8 week mindfulness course for mental and emotional wellbeing, physical conditions, pain and anxiety, and many other areas.

  • How do I know it is suited to me?

There are so many meditation apps out there, friend recommendations and a gazillion courses, it can feel overwhelming to wade through it all. I’m not going to tell you this is THE right way. There may not even be a right way. My practice has changed many times, evolving over the years just as other aspects of our life do. This is a perfect way to take your first step into a regular meditation practice regardless of whether you’ve meditated before or not. And it’s a great way to learn about learn about mindfulness. This could be an experiment to see if this style of practice is helpful to you.
